MacB: MacBeth with a Twist

Friday saw the enthusiasm and excitement in more than 500 students as they watched the preview of the upcoming fall production, MacB: The MacBeth Project. With the key elements and events that occurred in the original Shakespearean classic, MacBeth, this modernized version is filled with a hip-hop flare, adding some sweet beats to the original Shakespearean quotes, not to mention the dance numbers that will make you want to get up off of your seat and dance along with the actors.
So how is this different than any other musical, you might ask? Voices from the Trail got to sit down with leading lady, Deborah Robinson, explaining just that, as well as expressing her excitement for the upcoming production. Although a spring musical will be put in production starting with auditions this February, MacB can be confused as being a musical, though is actually not. The play “still uses the lines and monologues that Shakespeare wrote, but [it] incorporate[s] hip-hop beats into them,” in contrast to a musical, which Robinson describes as “busting out into song and singing about certain things.”
As for how the preview went this past Friday, Deborah raves that “It went well for what we have [and] we really pulled it together” after losing several cast members, originally cast for main parts. She also shows no nervousness when it comes to foreseeing opening night coming up this Friday: “We always seem to pull it together, even at times when we think, ‘we’re not going to make it,’ we always do [make it], so I think it will be one of those situations.” The actress adds that, “Everyone did an excellent job.” Robinson cannot hide her excitement for opening night as she gushes about the “collaboration that has come from doing this play.”
A lot of work has gone into the set, from artistic students taking time after school to paint graffiti for the set, as well as the engineering students working hard to provide shades to come down during some scenes.
The play opens this Friday and runs until Saturday, November 14.
