British alternative rock band Coldplay once again shows brilliance through their music in their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto. Formed in 1996, Coldplay quickly became one of the world’s top selling artists, selling millions of records worldwide. The group is comprised of singer Chris Martin, percussionist Will Champion, bass guitarist Guy Berriman, and guitarist Jonny Buckland. Coldplay first gained major popularity with their single “Yellow” in 2000. Since then, the rock band has released five studio albums: Parachutes in 2001, A Rush of Blood to the Head in 2002, X&Y in 2005, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends in 2008, and their most recent release, Mylo Xyloto. Because of their success, Coldplay has received over 40 music awards and over 100 nominations.

Since their last album release, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, in 2008, Coldplay has come out with a new style in their music unlike anything they have done before. Since its release in October, the Mylo Xyloto has already sold many copies worldwide and topped charts everywhere. In this album, Coldplay experiments making music with synthesizers and a different style to appeal to a variety of people. Containing elements of genres such as pop, Mylo Xyloto is different than Coldplay’s past releases and is definitely unique.

The album begins with a 42 second introduction titled “Mylo Xyloto”, composed of many sounds including stringed instruments and bells. The short introduction leads into the next song, “Hurts Like Heaven,” a fun, upbeat song with explosions of synths and guitar solos. “Hurts Like Heaven” is a great track to begin Coldplay’s album, giving fans an idea of what their experimental album may sound like.

“Paradise” is the third track of the album and is also the second released single from the album. “Paradise” is a captivating song made up of strings, piano, guitar, and Chris Martin’s calm vocals accompanied by a booming bass, drum beats, and synth effects that sounds similar to pop mainstream music.

The album’s third released single and the fourth track, “Charlie Brown,” returns the music to an upbeat pace with catchy guitar riffs and the pop-rock feel of Coldplay.

“Major Minus”, played with guitars and serious vocals, is a notable song that stands out from the rest of the album, due to its serious and dark tone. It is certainly an interesting change in style and is a great addition to the album.

Influenced by the pop, electronic, and R&B genres, the song “Princess of China” also stands out. One factor that distinguishes this song from the rest is the vocals of Barbadian recording artist Rihanna. “Princess of China” features a wide variety of sounds including a large amount of synthesizers and the amazing vocals of Rihanna and Chris Martin. This song presents the idea that artist from two different genres can join together and can also create a great song.

Overall, Mylo Xyloto is an great album with many notable tracks from Coldplay with a new interesting style.

How many times does a 14 year old musician, introduced just recently, have one of their songs #1 in the country for four straight weeks? Greyson Chance achieved this by being the first artist to be signed on Ellen Degeneres’s new label, Eleveneleven. One of Greyson’s relatives posted a video on YouTube of the popular artist singing Paparazzi for a choir event in Edmond, Oklahoma. The video flew to the third most popular video in 2010. There are over 40 million views of this performance. Greyson’s popularity was soon discovered on Ellen and thus was signed to Eleveneleven. Being on Eleveneleven did not give him talent; it just gave him the opportunity to share his wonderful abilities with the world.

Hold On ‘Til The Night, Greyson’s recent album, features a wide variety of songs from slow teenage love to fast tempoed joyful songs. Waiting Outside the Lines is an incredibly powerful song that really got me thinking. The lyrics in this song are in no way meaningless. There is definitely heart in the structure of this song. Unfriend You in some ways is a sad song, but you get caught up in the awesome violin work in the background that you forget about the melancholy lyrics. Home is in Your Eyes is another emotionally strong song. The vocals in the song really help show off Greyson’s talent. Hold on ’til the Night is one of those songs you want to hear over and over again. I fell hard for this song because it expresses such deep lyrics and wonderful instrumentals. Heart like Stone overall is a good song, but I don’t believe it is as strong as all the other songs. After hearing Hold on ’til the Night then listening to Heart like Stone, it did not quite reach the bar that Hold on ’til the Night set. Little London Girl is a very lovable song because of its upbeat happy tune, but why a London girl? What’s wrong with Americans? Cheyenne is another one of my favorite songs because of the fact that I finally found a song with a strong bass line. The lyrics again were straight from the artist’s soul. Summertrain is a very interesting and unique song. At first impression, I felt it was a little weird, but I soon realized this was only because it was different from any song I have heard. This weirdness of the song changed very soon. I now love the song. (Change is usually a good thing!) Stranded is another favorite on this album. It automatically put me in a happy mood after listening to a sadder song. Take a Look at Me Now blew me away right away! I adored the awesome instrument blend. This song got an 11 out of 10 for me.

This album is definitely something to put on your Christmas list!

My first thought when listening to Scotty McCreery’s album Clear as Day? “This can’t be the album!”
But don’t let McCreery’s boyish looks get in the way of his DEEP MANLY voice. He
sounds as if he has been singing country for his entire life, which he almost
has. Scotty McCreery has been singing since he was only 3 years old! His rich baritone
voice opened many opportunities for his career, which includes winning Season
10 of American Idol. McCreery’s
remake of I Love You This Big, was
simply amazing. Though I haven’t heard the original, I have the feeling I won’t
need to since Scotty’s version already sounds so complete. All of the songs on
the album seem to be from happy memories of different kinds of love with a playful-swaying
feel. Out of all of the songs on the album, track four, or The Trouble with Girls, truly made me feel sorry for the heartbreak
that Scotty must have experienced. This slow paced song opened with a marvelous
piano solo, and Scotty’s voice is perfect with the melancholy tone he portrays
in the song. “They’re sugar and spice and angel wings… They’re hard to find yet
there are so many of them. The way that you hate that you already love em’…The
trouble with girls is nobody loves trouble as much as me.” McCreery gives the
impression that girls have a sort of superpower that causes men to fall in love
with them. Which I can assure you, is not true. But McCreery must have
certainly been enchanted into love by a girl whose features got to him. In all,
Scotty’s album Clear as Day had an
upbeat and positive sound, which we all need now and again. It’s certain to say
that Scotty McCreery will have even more future success in country and in
singing in general. His voice will surely be enjoyable to future and present
generations of Country-Lovers. If you are a Country-Lover, you should definitely
listen to this album!

About two weeks ago from the time I am writing this, which is 12:50 AM on the morning of Monday, October 10th, 2011, I crashed onto my matress after coming home from a function, which started at 7:00 PM in the evening of Sunday, October 2nd, 2011. I had just experienced four hours of a concert, all of them fun. As part of the “Design a logo for us” (the school newspaper) and win two tickets to a Blink-182/My Chemical Romance concert in Marysville in a contest” contest hosted by Voices from the Trail, I won two tickets to see the bands Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre. The second ticket went to my dad, who enjoyed the concert along with many other parents. When I got there, people of all ages and at least two colors were lined up to see these great rock bands perform, and I don’t blame them: the music was great. Even from a 40-minute-long line to buy $20 tee-shirts, the amphitheatre’s acoustics were solid, and the opening band (Matt and Kim, in case anyone knows who they are) sounded crystal-clear. Or at least their drums and guitar(s?) did. I came to my seat just in time to see the charismatic, clean-shaven, smooth-voiced and pink-haired lead singer of MCR come onstage and get the crowd riled up. He had a great stage presence and face. Real energetic guy. Not quite as dramatic, but equally charming, were the three members of Blink-182. Any show with a shirtless and tattooed-out drummer is generally good, and this one didn’t disappoint. That guy pounded his set like it was feeding time at the zoo, and the foreman is at those last few nails deciding whether he gets a dinner with his family or more time getting hit with monkey poo (the zoo is undergoing maintenance). But yeah, my dad’s a self-styled drumming aficionado, and he was really into it. The whole band really contributed to the atmosphere, bantering with the fans, making masturbation-related non-sequiturs, drinking lots of beer… It was just like this really fun party and I’m glad I went. Good people, good bands, good location. Would do again. Thanks, Voices from the Trail!

Rise Against’s new single and music video “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” was inspired by teen bullying in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexual (LGBT) community. The band sends a message showing different scenarios of this issue and how it can affect an LGBT teen’s life in high school. In this case, these teens think the only resolution towards this problem is suicide. Before the teens go through with their resolution, they imagine how successful their lives will be and how their lives will change if they do not commit suicide. At the end of the video, clips of members from the It Gets Better Project tell all LGBT teens how meaningful their lives are and how life gets better. This message is touching and it can make teenagers think about their actions and how it may affect their peers. Schools need to come together as a family regarding this issue, for bullying anyone in the LGBT community will bring hate. Rise Against makes this problem aware in their music video. For all those who have been bullied and /or hurt in any way by their peers, others can relate to you. Stay positive, find the happiness in life, and it will do you well. Life, it does get better!

The moment I first marched onto the football field with my saxophone and uniform, I thought to myself, “In the past all those songs I played, rhythms I learned, and discipline I gained, has all lead me to this moment so that I may march forward and start a new measure in my life.”

As a freshman just starting out in high school, I had no idea what to expect from this sort of environment. Preparations for Saturday’s game required a lot of hard work, effort, and devotion, especially from a band student. The upperclassmen in band provided lots of assistance and were very kind and supportive to us freshmen. Their experienced guidance simplified our work load. Such hard work involved a band camp on a Friday and Saturday, where we learned the marching drills. Despite the heat, we were able to come together as a band with discipline to learn the commands and formations in just two weeks.

Marching past the stands to the tempo of the snare drum’s click track and playing that first note in the song “Fired Up” seemed to arouse the crowd with an excited cheer. It reminded me of the applause at my first band recital in the elementary school. From the eyes of a nine-year-old, I remember looking out into the audience from behind the bright stage lights to see what seemed like a million dark faces. Before that recital, my nervousness became more ravenous than ever. It wasn’t until I stopped looking so hard that I found my parents in the front row there to support me. On Saturday’s game, I became nervous again as I marched to center field for the pre-game show. The sight of the sold-out stands was quite overwhelming, not to mention the many cameras of ESPN broadcasting the game live across the nation. But as I took my place just left of the fifty-yard line and began to play the National Anthem, I took one more look through the crowd to find my parents sitting in the front row still there to support me in high school and I became relaxed again.

After we finished the final fermata of the “Star Spangled Banner”, the crowd went wild. When marching back to the stands while playing the fight song, I knew the hard work and effort was all worth it. I felt accomplished having performed at the football game, and I was in the game every time the band played from the stands to raise the team’s and the fans’ spirits. But of course, like any good performer, we do have room for improvement. However, for it being my first high school marching band experience, I feel we provided an excellent performance and I’m definitely excited to take part in future events.

Sean Combs aka P Diddy definitely shows a new side along with fellow group members Dawn Richard and Kalenna Vick in their new a lbum “Last Train to Paris” It features vocals from many artists such as Rick Ross, Usher, Swizz beatz, lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown and many more. Sean’s intention for this album was to create a sound that would be consider train music, in other words music that you would most likely hear on a train. “Last Train to Paris” was inspired by a romantic true story about Sean’s experience with the “woman of his dreams” as they get together and have a relationship for 3 months and then break up. One night as he was getting of stage, he heard that she was in Paris. It was the foggiest night in London the only way he could go see her was to take the last train to paris.

The album has 18 great songs. Although Sean experiments with new sounds, he doesn’t disappoint fans, who looked foward to his rapping, as he also incorporates both into his songs. Yet, many will be surprised by his soft vocals when hearing him sing in “I’ll even take off my shades.” Dawn and Kalenna are described as “kindred spirits.” Both have really nice voices and show off their vocals in “I hate that you love me.” Many of Danity Kane’s fans were familiar with the latest “Dawn,” while Kalenna might be recognized as the solo artist. Overall the best part would be the melodies and arrangements make their listeners feel relaxed.

Alyssa Bernal, a new up and coming artist creates a mood of familiarity with her new song “Cali Cali Cali.” Found by famous producer Pharrell Williams, who deems her as the “real deal” and a “true musician”, Alyssa sure has some big heels to fill. Her song Cali Cali Cali, an upbeat single, Alyssa sings about the atmosphere and scenery of California. Her songs allow the listener to appreciate the smoothness and softness of her voice. While Bernal may have a melodic voice she may not have that “it” factor that will push her to become a hit in today’s music industry. or that will most likely not be liked on the first listen. With a new style, this can easily be changed. Nevertheless, Alyssa Bernal expresses sincerity in this EP from the “cute pop” lyrics that can have the listener fall in love and relate.

Alyssa’s other song such as “Hold me tight” is a nice ballad. It also features Jason Wade of LifeHouse. This song has a nice romantic tone, which will surely have many couples dedicating it to each other. This EP is a great first debut album. If listeners like the type of music that sounds very thoughtful and soothing then they should definitely look more into Alyssa Bernal’s music. In the end, Alyssa Bernal does a nice job at contenting listeners to a more mature first album.

When we think of boy bands we think of the famous boy bands of the 90s; groups like: B2K, N-SYNC, 98 degrees, and Backstreet Boys. Mindless Behavior is just that, a boy band like back in the day but with a splash of modern style. The band is comprised of 4 boys, Roc Royal, Princeton, Ray Ray, and Prodigy. These four prepubescent boys will probably come to receive many fans for their music containing lyrics of life and love. Their self-titled album Mindless Behavior has classic RnB tunes. Their hit single My Girl consists of expressive lyrics about the love that might have fans feeling as though the boy group is channeling the new sensation, Justin Beibers style. Their song #1 Girl would have probably been a better choice as a single, it’s a more mainstream tune that would have received more radio plays and generated a larger fan base. Seeing as how boy bands have been pretty dead since the nineties, it might just be that Mindless Behavior has what it takes to bring them back.

The “TiK ToK” singer released her debut album in early January of this year. The good news? She produced some catchy songs. The bad news? That’s about the only good thing that can be said about this album.

Starting with the cover, the singer is featured in an overly-photoshopped image of herself trying to look fierce, or needless to say, an Animal. The overwhelming portrayal of her name with the pointless dollar sign replacing the “s” completely takes over the cover trying to make her look like a badass musician. The only thing it accomplishes is making her look like a wannabe gangster desperately trying to get noticed with overly-processed songs, which brings me to the topic of the music of the album itself.

Giving the singer the benefit of the doubt, this album has potential to be a good one. If the lyrics were not so shallow and had deeper meanings embedded within them, perhaps it would be easier to take her seriously as an artist. An even more disheartening fact: she co-wrote all of the songs, which gives her the image of a party-animal (notice the correlation with the title of the album) who is incapable of doing and thinking about anything else besides it. Proof of this is in the titles of the tracks themselves (for example, “Animal”, “Party at a Rich Dude’s House”, “Hungover”, etc.). One of the few good things that can be said about the lyrics is that she at least tries to put deeper meanings into them. However, she fails in doing so. The pop-singer serenades “Your love is my drug…” Unfortunately, that is about the only lyric that occupies the chorus.

Lyrics aside, the production of the songs is not half-bad. However, it is the overproduction of the tracks and her voice that turned me off in the first place. It is obvious that the so-called artist is not strong vocally, as auto-tune is majorly used in most, if not all, of the songs. Perhaps vocal lessons would have been an appropriate option prior to the start of production on this album eh, Kesha (oh, I’m sorry, Ke$ha)?

If you are the type of person that solely pays attention to the catchiness of songs, and not so much the lyrics, then this album would be ideal for you. Otherwise, don’t bother wasting your money. Personally, I’m only keeping this album to take up some of the 120 gigabyte space that occupies my iPod. My final rating: D+.
