After a semi-slow start a few minutes into the first quarter, the Mustangs picked up their tempo and began battling back and forth for every point they scored against the Delta Valley Conference’s leaders, the Franklin Wildcats; the Mustangs and the Wildcats both seemed to be unstoppable with the score changing every possession. After halftime it seemed to take the team a minute to come back together after giving up shot after shot and after a few turnovers in a row, giving Franklin time to extend their lead if only by 6 points. However with a three-point shot from the Mustang’s known gunner Brandon Ogle, the fire was restored and they played almost effortlessly; the fight toward victory felt more intense than at any point preceding it. Before anyone knew, it was the 4^th quarter and the Mustangs were trailing by only two points. Coach Manfredi’s faith never wavering from his team, challenged Mustangs to “snap [Franklin’s] streak”, and “make [the game] their own”. With a disappointing missed shot, and the crowd’s voices mingling together with an outstanding roar, the Mustangs took the Wildcats to a nerve-racking overtime. The crowd was certain our boys would come out on top however after missing free-throw after free-throw and after fouling multiple Wildcat players, the Franklin Wildcats lead extended to its final score being Franklin 77, Monterey Trail 73; a disappointing and hurtful loss to our boys who had fought so hard to keep themselves in the game. When asked how his team felt about the game and where he felt they needed to improve, Wesley Lawson, a Junior on the team, stated that, “The team had good energy on the bench, we out hustled the Wildcats hands down, it was our free-throws that just weren’t hitting”. Now with the Franklin game behind them, though not erased from their memory, the 15-7 Mustangs look to take on the Thundering Herd February 4^th at Elk Grove with tip-off at 7:00pm, in the hopes of changing their record to 16-7.

The ambiance at Franklin High School was tough due to the fact that they were still holding a grudge from the football season, and their players, built larger than our Mustangs, beat us in our first game of the season. Surely we will beat them when they play on our territory and have to face our school spirit.
