The first Winter Theatrefest took place on January 12th. If I was asked to sum the play up into one word, it would be: HILARIOUS!!! After the play I spoke to some audience members, and the average grade for the whole play was 5 out of 5 stars!

The legendary Hamlet by Shakespeare took a very interesting turn into an outrageously hilarious play depicting the rules of comedy. The play was student directed by senior Dalven McClain. He felt that there were too many high school issues in the previous plays, so he went for something new. Ms. Townsend chose Hamlet because “it seemed like fun!” Thus, “The Rules of Comedy” was born!!! The play went over the basic rules of comedy, which was set to Hamlet in a very goofy way.

The Rules of Comedy did not start off funny and this is not me being mean. Some intense skits were performed at the beginning of the play. They were very sad, yet interesting. The Comedy Sportz came out after the skits and changed the whole atmosphere! They did wonderful improv and had positive reactions from the audience. The Rules of Comedy was silly, awkward, and very funny. There were random outbursts into song as well as cream pies everywhere!

The cast and crew were all amazing! From the pie maker to the main character, everyone did great! Julio Sanchez, even with a small part, was very important to the play. He developed a very special technique when it came to making cream pies. You have to “twist at the wrist and spray counter clockwise” according to Julio. The main character, Hamlet, was played by Taylor Church and he recalls missing one word; Judgement. Seleba Outtara, one of the narrators of the play, believed the play went lovely. They all did fantastic!

Make sure you go check out the Comedy Sportz Team on Febuary 8th here at MT against Wood Creek. The Willy Wonka play can be seen on March 16th-24th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and admission is $8 for students. Go check out the awesome Oompa Loompas!!!

I was once an honor student in elementary school until 6th grade when laziness kicked in. From that point on, I knew that I was sick of school. But I had to deal with 6 more years of it. In middle school, I was in an Honors English class that I failed miserably due to carelessness and I had to be demoted to regular English the next term. I was in fear that I wouldn’t promote from middle school and join high school with my friends with an F, but luckily at that time, there was a rule that even with one F, a student could still promote.

Today, I am a high school senior fearing for my future, although I seem so calm and collected on the exterior. I am slightly ashamed of the D’s on my transcript that possibly may not get me into the schools I will apply to. Being realistic, it’s a waste of time and money when my grades don’t meet the A-G requirements that the California State Universities and Universities of California follow. Occasionally, the risk is worth the reward. But even if I do apply to these schools, my parents don’t have enough money to pay for my tuition.

The thought of joining the military came into my mind when I felt that I wanted to stop living off my parents. A friend of mine is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps, but that’s way too intense for me, especially with my size and frame. Plus, he complains about it all the time. A student teacher who substituted in my Chemistry class told the students that he was in the United States Air Force and how that was the “greatest” experience of his life. From my knowledge, I knew that the Air Force was the safest branch since most of them aren’t close to danger. I’m not that serious about joining, but I’m definitely interested.

I am now left with the two decisions most seniors face today: college or the military?

Edwin Ganas, senior at Monterey Trail High School

To help me answer this life changing question, I interviewed two high school seniors who are planning to join the military and the student teacher who substituted for my Chemistry class. First, I interviewed Edwin Ganas, a senior here at Monterey Trail High School. Edwin plans on joining the United States Navy after high school.

“It’s a family thing, so I want to carry on the family tradition,” he says.

I asked Edwin if the decision to join was unanimous for him due to family tradition. He replied, “College was on my mind, but I know that I’m not a school person. I chose the military because of the opportunities other careers can offer, such as traveling to places where you are needed and being part of something that’s bigger than yourself.”

Edwin has been preparing for the Navy by exercising vigorously, studying mechanics, and building mental toughness. He plans on making his military service into a career, so he can support his future children with the benefits he receives in the Navy.

Dean Hoang, senior at Sheldon High School

Next, I interviewed Dean Hoang, a senior at Sheldon High School. As of November 9, 2011, Dean is enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

“I feel very proud of myself and relieved that I passed all of the medical and sensory tests with flying colors,” he says. He has been preparing to join the Marines for over 5 months of physical training. He decided to join because he felt like he stayed the same person in middle school who was “immature, weird, and treated everything like it was a joke”.

He explains, “What I want out of the Marines is to give me a challenge; to learn discipline, tradition, valor, and most importantly, a brotherhood among your fellow servicemen.” Initially, Dean’s parents didn’t want him to join the Marines and wanted him to become a pharmacist until his official enlistment.

“They thought I’d be vulnerable in the battlefield,” he says. After his service, Dean plans on settling down, having children, and just living life.

“Not a very hard thing to do.”

Mr. Ryan Carlo, student teacher at Monterey Trail High School

Finally, I interviewed Mr. Ryan Carlo, a veteran now student teacher at Monterey Trail. As a senior in high school, Mr. Carlo “wasn’t engaged with his classes”. Although he took the ACT and scored the second highest in his school, his GPA wasn’t enough to graduate. This brought the attention of the school administration.

“It was eye opening,” states Mr. Carlo. “My principal was practically yelling at me and my parents, who were also in the room, saying ‘What is keeping him from graduating?’”

After graduating high school with a GPA around 1, Mr. Carlo decided to join the military in hopes of making alterations to his life. Mr. Carlo, formerly Staff Sergeant Ryan Carlo, served as a K9 police officer for 6 years in the United States Air Force. He describes his experience in the Air Force as “absolutely positive all around”.

He explains, “Your military image reflects your self image. You get a sense of pride wearing that uniform knowing you represent a part of the United States. You’re doing something a lot of people can’t do.”

After serving both wars in the Middle East, Mr. Carlo attended California State University in Sacramento with help from the G.I. Bill giving him money for college. He earned a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and is currently working on getting his teaching credentials. I asked Mr. Carlo his thoughts on why teenagers are joining the military instead of going to college.

“It could be a variety of reasons,” he replies. “They could have a close family member or friend who joined… they need a change in their life… or money for college.”

Mr. Carlo, formerly Staff Sergeant Ryan Carlo, with his narcotics detecting dog Sonja in 2003.

Because of his experience in both the military and college, I also asked him if he had advice for students deciding between those two options. “Life is not a race… Don’t figure out what you want to do with your life at 18, because what you want to do at 18 years old may not be what you want to do when you’re 45… Pursue the things you enjoy in life, and what you do sometimes is what you do all the time.”

After conducting all my interviews, I had some thinking to do. As far as I know, most high school seniors, including me, are stressing out a lot about their future. Our advisor at Voices from the Trail, the lovely Mrs. Fox, told me a story of how her nephew called her on a random day crying to her — which was odd to her because he wasn’t an emotional person, “It’s not fair that I have to make decisions about my life when I’m 18 years old.” I agreed wholeheartedly. I also take Mr. Carlo’s words into consideration. What I want to do now may not be the same when I’m at a much older age. My career choices have changed throughout high school from being a teacher to a photographer to a journalist. I can’t imagine how much my major in college is going to change. At this moment, I plan on earning a bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Sac State and possibly becoming a beat writer for the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team. I’ve set myself on that path for two years now and I intend on achieving that goal. Going into the Air Force is just a backup plan because I don’t want to be the biggest hypocrite in the world and attend a community college. I’m just going with the flow right now, and wherever life takes me is where I will go. So I guess I’m not stressing out… That much.

There are different types of high school seniors: the ones who don’t care about their future, the ones who will go straight into work — but the most common ones: the ones who want to go to college, and the ones who join the military. Which one will you be?

My first thought when listening to Scotty McCreery’s album Clear as Day? “This can’t be the album!”
But don’t let McCreery’s boyish looks get in the way of his DEEP MANLY voice. He
sounds as if he has been singing country for his entire life, which he almost
has. Scotty McCreery has been singing since he was only 3 years old! His rich baritone
voice opened many opportunities for his career, which includes winning Season
10 of American Idol. McCreery’s
remake of I Love You This Big, was
simply amazing. Though I haven’t heard the original, I have the feeling I won’t
need to since Scotty’s version already sounds so complete. All of the songs on
the album seem to be from happy memories of different kinds of love with a playful-swaying
feel. Out of all of the songs on the album, track four, or The Trouble with Girls, truly made me feel sorry for the heartbreak
that Scotty must have experienced. This slow paced song opened with a marvelous
piano solo, and Scotty’s voice is perfect with the melancholy tone he portrays
in the song. “They’re sugar and spice and angel wings… They’re hard to find yet
there are so many of them. The way that you hate that you already love em’…The
trouble with girls is nobody loves trouble as much as me.” McCreery gives the
impression that girls have a sort of superpower that causes men to fall in love
with them. Which I can assure you, is not true. But McCreery must have
certainly been enchanted into love by a girl whose features got to him. In all,
Scotty’s album Clear as Day had an
upbeat and positive sound, which we all need now and again. It’s certain to say
that Scotty McCreery will have even more future success in country and in
singing in general. His voice will surely be enjoyable to future and present
generations of Country-Lovers. If you are a Country-Lover, you should definitely
listen to this album!

On October 21st, Monterey Trail held our Homecoming Palooza. The Palooza started at 5:30 in the cafeteria. It was a success, with many students attending to support their fellow Mustangs. Upon entering the cafeteria, the benches were arranged in a semi circle, giving the performers undivided attention. Towards the back, we had our parent volunteers selling gorgeous beads and also working a face painting booth! To the far right, there were tables filled with food: nachos, soda, and a very popular item- cake pops!

But of course the purpose of our Palooza is to showcase the many talents we have here on campus. We had many performances including singing, dancing, poetry reading. The first performance was from none other than our Poly Club! Each and every act was unique to the performer, and performances ranged from a slow acoustic ballet to a rap.

I would like to give a special thanks to all our parents and volunteers that helped at the Palooza. We couldn’t have done it without you! Overall, the Palooza was blast and if you weren’t able to attend this one, hopefully we’ll see you at the next!

Early Thursday morning, as many may have noticed, construction workers arrived behind our school to prepare, assemble, and install our very first electronic marquee. This could only have been made possible thanks to school grants. The project was finished by early evening just in time for idle cars to admire while at a red light. The marquee stands in clear sight of the Calvine and Cliffcrest street intersection. It has been built right behind the Mark Macres Stadium scoreboard. All day, the marquee’s LED light text will display upcoming events and news. It currently lists the school’s phone number, schoolloop address and a sincere congratulations to last years class of senior graduates, perfect timing for the homecoming game where Mustang alumni are welcome, class of 2011 and all. At night, the marquee truly becomes a great spectacle when the sign’s back light is turned on, announcing with pride, “Monterey Trail High School, Home of the Mustangs.”

We should consider ourselves lucky to be attending Monterey Trail during this memorable moment. In future years to come when driving down the busy street of Calvine, we can always look at the marquee and say “I was there when it was built!” As the marquee continues to announce upcoming events, we will always have this historical moment in our minds.

Don’t Trash the Trail is a program that is based on eliminating the garbage and waste around the campus. The program was started last year by STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) and has done really well since then. The club is led by Mr. Kirk and Mr. Lascola and has more than 10 student supporters. They have been working on a Solar-Powered Trash Compactor, and it seems very promising. It won’t be done anytime soon, because it takes a lot of time to make something this resourceful and complex. DTTT is also working on a Public Service Video that they hope to finish sometime in January. It will include interviews with students concerning trash around the campus and new recycling programs. The CADD (Computer-Aided Drafting and Design) students made a scaled map of the campus with all of the trash “hot spots” from data they collected over a 3 month span. DTTT made a trash audit and separated & sorted trash and found out that a lot of recyclable objects were thrown into the garbage cans.

Don’t Trash the Trail has a lot of promise and will do great things to reduce the garbage of the campus and hopefully expand to the community. The solar-powered trash compactor would greatly help reduce trash and make it easier to get rid of it. I am looking forward to the public service video because I think it will be very interesting. It is very bad that over 30% of the things we throw in the garbage are recyclable and it is very harmful to our environment. My favorite of all the projects would be the Hot Spot Map. They went out every day at lunch and cataloged where all the trash was located and combined months’ worth of data onto a scaled map. It tells us where most of the littered trash is and probably what group is causing it. Overall, I think what they are doing is great for the school and I’d like to thank Mr. Lascola for letting me interview him.

Remember, Don’t Trash the Trail.
