The first Winter Theatrefest took place on January 12th. If I was asked to sum the play up into one word, it would be: HILARIOUS!!! After the play I spoke to some audience members, and the average grade for the whole play was 5 out of 5 stars!

The legendary Hamlet by Shakespeare took a very interesting turn into an outrageously hilarious play depicting the rules of comedy. The play was student directed by senior Dalven McClain. He felt that there were too many high school issues in the previous plays, so he went for something new. Ms. Townsend chose Hamlet because “it seemed like fun!” Thus, “The Rules of Comedy” was born!!! The play went over the basic rules of comedy, which was set to Hamlet in a very goofy way.

The Rules of Comedy did not start off funny and this is not me being mean. Some intense skits were performed at the beginning of the play. They were very sad, yet interesting. The Comedy Sportz came out after the skits and changed the whole atmosphere! They did wonderful improv and had positive reactions from the audience. The Rules of Comedy was silly, awkward, and very funny. There were random outbursts into song as well as cream pies everywhere!

The cast and crew were all amazing! From the pie maker to the main character, everyone did great! Julio Sanchez, even with a small part, was very important to the play. He developed a very special technique when it came to making cream pies. You have to “twist at the wrist and spray counter clockwise” according to Julio. The main character, Hamlet, was played by Taylor Church and he recalls missing one word; Judgement. Seleba Outtara, one of the narrators of the play, believed the play went lovely. They all did fantastic!

Make sure you go check out the Comedy Sportz Team on Febuary 8th here at MT against Wood Creek. The Willy Wonka play can be seen on March 16th-24th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and admission is $8 for students. Go check out the awesome Oompa Loompas!!!

On October 21st, Monterey Trail held our Homecoming Palooza. The Palooza started at 5:30 in the cafeteria. It was a success, with many students attending to support their fellow Mustangs. Upon entering the cafeteria, the benches were arranged in a semi circle, giving the performers undivided attention. Towards the back, we had our parent volunteers selling gorgeous beads and also working a face painting booth! To the far right, there were tables filled with food: nachos, soda, and a very popular item- cake pops!

But of course the purpose of our Palooza is to showcase the many talents we have here on campus. We had many performances including singing, dancing, poetry reading. The first performance was from none other than our Poly Club! Each and every act was unique to the performer, and performances ranged from a slow acoustic ballet to a rap.

I would like to give a special thanks to all our parents and volunteers that helped at the Palooza. We couldn’t have done it without you! Overall, the Palooza was blast and if you weren’t able to attend this one, hopefully we’ll see you at the next!

Early Thursday morning, as many may have noticed, construction workers arrived behind our school to prepare, assemble, and install our very first electronic marquee. This could only have been made possible thanks to school grants. The project was finished by early evening just in time for idle cars to admire while at a red light. The marquee stands in clear sight of the Calvine and Cliffcrest street intersection. It has been built right behind the Mark Macres Stadium scoreboard. All day, the marquee’s LED light text will display upcoming events and news. It currently lists the school’s phone number, schoolloop address and a sincere congratulations to last years class of senior graduates, perfect timing for the homecoming game where Mustang alumni are welcome, class of 2011 and all. At night, the marquee truly becomes a great spectacle when the sign’s back light is turned on, announcing with pride, “Monterey Trail High School, Home of the Mustangs.”

We should consider ourselves lucky to be attending Monterey Trail during this memorable moment. In future years to come when driving down the busy street of Calvine, we can always look at the marquee and say “I was there when it was built!” As the marquee continues to announce upcoming events, we will always have this historical moment in our minds.

This year’s club rush was an amazing event! Key Club and Poly Club were constantly pumped with energy and Young Life had a continuous line of interested students. On Thursday afternoon, boys in Poly club even gave a short preview of their annual multicultural dance, while the girl members were wearing beautiful floral print skirts and plumerias in their hair. Our fellow Mustangs showed unity when Videogame Club agreed to play music from their speakerbox forand impromptu performance from Poly Club. Key Club (as always) could be seen from space with their bright-orange-KeyClub-spirit! If the clubs are as great as the excitement that has built up in these past few days, Monterey Trail will surely have one of the best years yet!

The music booms. The aroma of a delicious helping of pizza draws you into the cafeteria. Although the sun has been beating down on you the whole day, the refreshing wind of air-conditioning just makes you want to sigh contently. Students and teachers mingle excitedly. Impulse is showing their moves on the dance floor. Your friends invite you to a game of Ninja. Sorry upperclassmen, but this party is for freshmen only.

The Tailgate Party for the Class of 2015 included food, games, an Impulse performance, air-conditioning, and a raffle for a free gift card to Starbucks, McDonalds, and Jamba Juice. All of which was free of charge and exclusively for freshman. Link Crew used this chance to socialize with the freshmen and advertise school events to get them involved. One game included “Pin the Horseshoe on the Eagle” in which students were to pin a MTHS horseshoe on a Pleasant Grove Eagle. “It’s to pump them up for the game tomorrow,” said Alex Cao, a Link Crew leader running the booth. Activities such as games of Ninja, limbo, hula hoop competitions, face painting and dance battles brought the true mustangs out of the freshman. “We all love it, being a mustang,” confesses Jasmine Aduna and Ayrelle Claments at the party. “We’re just really proud.” Impulse brought the party up a notch with a refreshing performance; everyone in the room could feel the exhilarating vibe.

There are two main stereotypes for freshman: twitchy and shy nerds or rude and impulsive wanna-bes. However, is the class of 2015 changing up the game? According to a few teachers and upperclassmen at the Freshman Tailgate Party on August 26, the fresh meat at Monterey Trail are altering tradition. “I think they [the freshmen] have a good future. They’re really motivated and involved this year,” says Jennifer Stanley, a Link Crew leader helping out at the party. “They always ask questions and they love socializing.” Other upperclassmen couldn’t agree more. As Beverly Huey and Raksha Singh pass out refreshments, they agree that his year’s freshmen are “excited, more open, and involved.” Then again, they just might be doing it to survive high school. According to Ms. Bott, the school’s Academic Literacy teacher, “They [the freshmen] have a strong work ethic. They’re smart kids with manners, but that’s probably because they have no choice,” she says with a chuckle.

Either way, the Tailgate Party was an exceptional way to welcome the newcomers at Monterey Trail. The bumps on the road are yet to come, but for the moment, the mustangs on the Trail are enjoying (or dreading, whoever you may be) their back to school spirit. And with that, Zuri Lazare could not have said it any better: “I’m excited for a good year, and especially a good start to high school.”

Excitement was in the air in the Sheldon High School Performing Arts Center as Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen and even Alumni waited for the show to start. And when it did, shouts and cheers erupted from the audience. Brianna Fennel and Brian Presueth, both alumni, started off the show as Masters of Ceremonies and began announcing the next performance along with witty descriptions that hinted what type of performance would be. Dancers showed off their talent and even individual dancers had their own spotlight as they choreographedd their own show. From New Orleans to sleepovers, this show was absolutely breathtaking. Astonishing guess performances from other high schools and even our very own Poly Club were riddled in throughout the night to add even more diversity. In the program given, there were “Senior Shout Outs” that were incredible and sentimental and even Mrs. Howland had her own “Appreciation Message”.

Overall, this was a night to enjoy and remember for the years to come.
