Early at 7:00 am, cheerleaders begin preparing as the gym fills for a broadcasted spirit event. Varsity football players meet in a circle with the news-reporter for a “Mustang” break, followed by a cheer with claps and “Beat Elk Grove” chants. A few students begin to hula-hoop while cheerleaders restart the previous cheer. The Cheerleaders begin a clap/stomp cheer preceding the start of the drums. As the gym continues to fill with students, drumming continues with a spirit chant. The Cheerleaders begin a new cheer “Ay Mustangs”, ending with the audience breaking into a wave. Drumming assists applause and shouts, while cheer squad begins “Pump that Mustang Spirit Up” cheer. As the Cheerleaders continue, cheers progressively get louder and louder until the end of the event.

After the Rally, Voices from the Trail met with Coach Ewing for a few quick questions. When asked about today’s outcome he said it was, “Phenomenal—they showed a lot of spirit. The student body really did an outstanding job organizing the event. Today’s event really represents the student body, the students are very together. Great show of commitment of fans, you guys are the ones who showed up today. Last year you guys kept on us, we started the season bad, but you guys stayed with us till the end, when we started doing better, winning some games, until we became good. And you guys did a great job this morning, coming to show your spirit.”

He also said, “This season is going to be exciting and fun-filled. I really encourage you to get out to as many games as you can, like I said earlier. We’re going to have fun no matter what we face, or whether we win or lose. The players are out there for fun, and they’re going to give it their best effort, that’s what makes it a fun environment. The kids play hard and give great games.”  And for today’s game, “Oh yeah, today’s game will definitely be better; the Freshman are still going through the learning system and don’t have the experience, and we’ve got players that are fantastic and have gone through a lot of training, and practiced hard for today’s game. I encourage you to be a part of the crowd and go out there, go to everything you can, get involved. We have many great teams that give it their best effort, and the student body puts together really great      events.”
