When the War Hits Close to Home – An MTHS Family’s Story

The Kirkuk, Iraq War: It is surprising how little we hear about it. Among many of Americas’ political peace-keeping efforts overseas is the Kirkuk War in Iraq. Its subtlety blankets society as a fog that will, in time, pass. However, the war in Kirkuk takes shape as a heroic mission taken by our loved compatriots, as Monterey Trail High School students learn that our very own Mrs. Robinson’s husband, Oliver Robinson, is stationed at Kirkuk in an effort to help stabilize the Iraqi government and to support communication. But, this isn’t Mr. Robinson’s first time supporting war effort in his 14 years with the Marines. He was deployed during the first Gulf War, but is now a member of the Air Force National Guard.

Mrs. Robinson believes that our country should do everything we can to prevent another terrorist attack, but it will take much more than just dispatching soldiers. “I’m not sure we can ‘fix’ their country because we are just so different. But I support our men and women in uniform 100%.”

Though Mr. Robinson’s term lasts 6 months, his family misses him dearly – he hasn’t had an opportunity to attend his daughter’s basketball games this season. All Mrs. Robinson wants Oliver to know is that “…everything here is fine. I can handle things while he’s gone, but I would tell him to stay safe, and thank him for his unselfish commitment.”

Going on with our pedestrian lives, life beyond America evades us – and even more, war efforts go unnoticed except for our pre-ordained sympathy. Many thanks to Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Robinson, and the many soldiers on duty.
