Valentines Day: Best and Worst

Valentine’s Day; a time for love, hugs, kisses, chocolates, flowers and grand romantic gestures.  It’s a day when cupid sits in the sky and points his little arrow at the world, hoping to strike people with arrows of love. But sometimes he misses and when he does it can get ugly. Voices from the Trail caught up with a few teachers on campus to get their stories on the best and worst times of Valentines Day past.

 Mrs. Cook

The Best Valentines Day I have had was when my husband sent me roses that were same color as the flowers in my wedding bouquet.  I just couldn’t believe he took the time to remember the color of the peach roses from those years ago.  It was lovely

The Worst was probably when I was in high school, and I had no one to celebrate valentines with.

 Mrs. Fox

The Best Valentines Day would be the year my husband made a slideshow on my computer.  My husband and I grew up in the same hometown, so we had known each other a long time.  At the time I was attending Sac Sate.  I remember wakening up early in the morning, and the first thing I  would do was go on the computer to finish up whatever I needed before class started. Somehow, my husband set up the computer so that as soon as I had touched the mouse, it turned on and a slideshow opened up.  It had baby pictures of us and pictures as we were growing up, pictures of our wedding day and of our kids all set to “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, which is one of my favorite songs.  My kids whined that day because I kept playing that song and slideshow over and over.

The Worst was when I was in pre-term labor with my first son.  The doctors tried to keep me from having that baby since it was too early,so I spent Valentines Day in the hospital. Not a good Valentine’s day at all.

Mrs. Gallagher

I don’t remember a best valentines day, or a worst valentines day, but the most memorable would be in February of 1998 when I was one week from giving birth to my son.  The doctor said she was available that day and that I could schedule my C-section, but I didn’t want my son to have his birthday on Valentines Day, so I turned down her offer.  Instead I went to the movies with my husband to see the “Wedding Singer”. I remember laughing so much, because I knew it was going to be a long time before my husband and I would be able to do that again.

Mr. Winder [When Voices from the Trail asked Mr. Winder his Valentines Day best and worst there was some hesitancy]

“Go ask somebody else” he chuckled thinking about all his Valentines Day’s of the past. Finally after a little probing and some laughs we got it out of him.

The Best would be when I got a copy of Popular Mechanics.

The Worst was in second grade, I didn’t get any valentines, andI had to go with my older sister to the Valentines Day dance.

Mrs. Lagomarsino

I don’t really have a best or worst, but I know that I hated Valentines Day in high school and college, but I loved it in elementary school, where I got cards and sweets.  If I had to say I guess the best would probably be when my husband and I went to Fiji.  We went scuba diving and it happened to be the fourteenth

The Worst would be when I got no gifts in my first year of college; I was brand new and didn’t really know anyone so it was a bit lonely.

 Ms. Garcia

The Best would be when I was around eight or nine years old my mom made a cake with frosting, and it said “I love you” with red and pink frosting. It was really sweet

The Worst would be when my ex-husband wouldn’t give me anything, no flowers, no cards, NOTHING!

Ms. Martin

The Best Valentines Day would be when my high school boyfriend borrowed my car. When I got it back, it had roses on the hood, and a brand new stereo system. I really can’t remember a worst Valentines Day

 Ms. Green

I don’t have a best valentines day.

But my worst would be when I was in fourth grade, I had just moved to Auburn and I was invited to a girl’s party, since I was new of course I wanted to go but my mom wasnt sure of her way around yet. It was raining and my mom, sister and I were driving on dirt roads.  It was really dark, and we couldn’t find the house, so we drove up to a random driveway.  It turned out to be the wrong house, so we drove back down.  On the way down, the car somehow slipped and was teetering over an embankment; we all got so scared, that our mom told us to get out on one side of the car.  So we are in the middle of a forest, at night in the rain we start walking and find a house; a newlywed couple celebrating their first valentine’s day together pointed us to the direction of the girls house, that turned up to be just up the road it was a very strange experience.

I also remember another valentines day where I was in 7th grade I had a friend over, and we were playing on the trampoline in our huge backyard.  My mom was cutting down a branch of a tree with a small chain saw.  I didn’t see it happen, but I know that somehow, the chain saw hit my mom’s arm.  We were at the emergency room for about 6 ½ to about 8 hours. It ruined my sleepover plans.

[Laughing Ms Green says “I shouldn’t spend Valentines Day with my mom because on that day she is dangerous or cursed]

 Mr. Hyde

The Best Valentine’s Day would be the time I came back from college and went up to my mom’s house to surprise her.  Her birthday and Valentines Day fall on the same day, and I had told her I couldn’t make it, so it was nice to surprise her

The Worst would probably be this Valentines Day, because my mom past away last year, so this will be the first Valentines Day without her.

Mr. Goodwin

The Best Valentines Days are when they fall on a weekends, so that I can spend the whole day with my wife maybe going to the restaurant or something.  Weekdays are harder, especially because of my schedule, so I just get a card for her, its nothing like it could be if it was on the weekend.

The Worst ones would be when you take a look at the calendar and you realize it’s the February 13th.  Then you go to get a card, and the racks are empty, so last minute doesn’t go to well.  It’s happened to me once. Valentines Day has become so commercialized.  To me it’s not about how much you spend, but it’s about rekindling that connection

Mr. Cuthbertson

The Best Valentines Day would be when I got some pink and red paper and I made hearts out of them.  I posted them around the house, and each one of them had a love poem on it.  I then posted up several more hearts around the front porch using wire to show my wife.

On another valentines day, I had gotten freshly cut red tulips, since they were my wife’s favorite.  We have a fountain in the back yard, and early in the morning, I decorated it with the tulips to surprise her that morning. I think I always do valentines day big because of my dad, when I was younger he always gave us cards.

The Worst would be when I was at college at Chico, and I had no one to celebrate the day with.

Voices from the Trail, wishes everyone a Happy Valentines Day, we hope it goes well for all you out there but if it doesn’t; just think of the funny story you will have of Valentine day’s pasts.
